Pumpkin is a rainy vegetable crop harvested 3-4 months after planting. The crop is medicinal and used as food. Through proper plant management practices pumpkins give high yields. Additionally, pumpkins are highly demanded and highly beneficial as they act as an oxidant, boosts eye vision, lowers blood pressure, source of vitamin and potassium. Furthermore, the crops can be grown for commercial purposes and adapts to climate changes. The crop is mainly affected by pests like fruit flies, and red pumpkin beetle while diseases are powdery mildew, downy mildew and mosaic.

Start by selecting sandy loam soils with organic matter, correct soil pH between 6-7, level field, add organic matter and instal a water source. Additionally, mix manure with soil, sow 4-5 seeds per pit, thin after germination and always apply fertilizers.

Plant management

Ensure to control weeds, irrigate plants every 3-4 days and control pets and diseases. Also ensure timely harvest when the connecting stem start to shrivel this should be done carefully with a knife. Additionally, place developing fruits on a piece of wood to avoid root rot diseases and apply soil nutrient when leaves turn yellow. Lastly, avoid planting pumpkins during frost conditions as this cause root rot.
