»Growing citrus in containers«
Citrus is one of the most common fruit trees grown but these can also be grown in containers.
Growing citrus in pots ensures that the citrus occupies less space and hence you can have very may trees in a small piece of land. When growing citrus in containers, choose a large enough container that is about 2 feet wide and 2 feet deep with several holes in the bottom. Plant suitable citrus varieties on the onset of rains.
Citrus growing tips
Use the best type of soil for the containers. The best soil is a potting mix with a combination of compost, peat moss and vermiculite.
Put your container in a good position where the citrus receives a minimum of 8 hours of sunlight daily.
Plant the citrus tree correctly by filling the bottom half of the container with soil, remove the citrus tree from the nursery pot and loosen the roots at the bottom while keeping the root ball intact. Put the citrus in the middle of the container and if grafted, ensure that the graft line is above the soil.
Water your citrus slowly and deeply, and pay attention to ensure that you are not over watering the plant. How often you water depends on the weather conditions.
Feed your citrus regularly using organic fertilizer because excess water during watering goes along with the nutrients.
Prune your citrus when needed and protect the citrus from freezing temperatures.
