To make fermented organic fertilizer, you will need manure, husks, soil, charcoal, bran, rock dust/ ash, molasses, yeast, and untreated water i.e. water without chlorine because chlorine kills microorganisms yet they are needed in making the fermented microbial fertilizer.
Preparation process
To make fermented organic fertilizer, the yeast, water, and molasses are combined and mixed.
The dry ingredients are put laid on a tarpaulin laid on the ground, one ingredient after the other in layers.
After they have been put in layers, the ingredients are then mixed together.
As mixing is being done, the mixture of yeast, water, and molasses is poured into the dry ingredients until a moisture content of about 50% is obtained.
The fertilizer should be mixed in a shade out of reach from both sunlight and rain.
The right moisture content is reached when the mixture can form a ball when squeezed in the palm but the ball crumbles when a little force is applied.
After mixing, cover it and come back after 2 days to check on the temperature, and if it’s not hot enough then you have to turn it. If it’s not hot enough, turn the mixture twice every day for 3 days and then once every day after that for 7 days.
Leave it to sit and on day 15, it’s ready for use.
Application rates
The fermented organic fertilizer is only semi-decomposed and continues to undergo decomposition hence you don’t need to apply it directly onto the plants.
in a nursery, the organic fertilizer is mixed with soil in a ratio of 1:4 to make potting mix.
