Over the years, significant advancements have been made, resulting in a highly superior breed of Dorper. Through our journey, we have recognized the need to enhance our local Dorper sheep.
The Dorper breed is preferred over other sheep and goat breeds due to its remarkable adaptability. Dorpers exhibit excellent mothering abilities, rapid growth, substantial weight gain, and exceptional disease resistance. Moreover, they thrive in diverse climates found in Kenya. However, we have encountered several challenges in sourcing high-quality genetics, ensuring the affordability of medication, and developing competent personnel for flock management.
We have successfully addressed these challenges through various means. Firstly, we have established strong partnerships, enabling us to source superior genetics. In 2016, we embarked on an important mission to South Africa, where we visited exceptional farmers and acquired the world’s best genetics. Our vision is to uplift Kenyan farmers by making this breed readily available and affordable.
For aspiring farmers, we recommend starting with one of our hybrid rams, which are bred from a South African ram and our local Dorper. Currently, the price for this ram is set at 25,000 Kenyan shillings, while the ewe is priced at 15,000 Kenyan shillings.
For experienced farmers, we offer a separate category. At present, we provide pure South African genetics, where both the sire and the ewe originate from South Africa. The progenies of these genetics are available for purchase, starting at 70,000 shillings for rams below one year old and 100,000 shillings for rams at one year old.
For novice farmers, I recommend starting with approximately ten ewes. This sample size will provide ample opportunity for learning effective Dorper management techniques while contributing to the growth of the Dorper industry in Kenya.
