Bio security involves setting and following farm guidelines aiming disease and pest control to prevent invasion of harmful pests and diseases to farms.
Additionally bio security is essential for sustainable pig production and production of safe pork thus it is always very important for farmers to follow the set bio security guide lines to reduce on the costs involved in disease and pest control and also to avoid losses resulting from pests and diseases. It is highly recommended to establish footbath at farm entrances.
Bio security measures
Start by establishing pig farms 500 metres away from other animal farms in the community. Also pig houses should have concrete floors with good ventilation and always avoid crowding animals. Furthermore, restrict farm visitors by always locking farm entrances and provide overalls and gumboots to visitors. Regularly renew footbath disinfectant, park vehicles outside farm, always clean and sanitize hands.
Other measures
Always strictly follow farm dressing arrangements and quarantine new pigs at a distance for 3 weeks. Also regularly clean and disinfect pens, clean farm premises and ensure that pig house should have a slopping concrete floor for proper drainage. Furthermore, sprinkle lime at farm entrance, clean and disinfect returning vehicles and properly store animal feeds and water. Lastly, ensure animal feed and water availability at all times, vaccinate animals and wash hands before and after handling animals.
