Cabbages are important nutritionally as they contain large amounts of Vitamin C and fiber which help to prevent constipation. Farming is also a business and it is very easy to make money with cabbage.

For a farmer to make money out of cabbage production they have to follow two major pointers, choosing the right cabbage seed and religiously following good agronomic practices. When choosing the right cabbage seed varieties, the farmer should consider five important factors. The factors include the days to maturity as it determines how soon the farmer can start making money, the head size where the farmer can only choose a cabbage variety with a head size demanded by their market, the crop uniformity in size and maturity where a farmer should choose a cabbage variety that matures at the same time, the field holding capacity and the disease tolerance.

Factors to consider

When choosing the right cabbage seed varieties, the farmer should consider five important factors. The first factor is the days to maturity as it determines how soon the farmer can start making money and the number of cycles the farmer can plant in a year. The second factor is the head size where the farmer can only choose a cabbage variety with a head size demanded by their market e.g. formal markets demand medium-sized cabbage heads and informal markets demand large-sized heads. The third factor is crop uniformity in size and maturity where a farmer should choose a cabbage variety that matures at the same time so that harvesting is only done 2-3 times. The fourth factor is the field holding capacity where the farmer should choose a variety with a longer period between maturity and splitting. The fifth factor is disease tolerance where a farmer should choose a cabbage variety tolerant to black rots.

Cabbage seed varieties.

Some examples of cabbage seed varieties include Fabiola, Delight, and Cotton. Cabbage Fabiola matures in 65 days from transplanting, enabling the farmer to be the first in the market and have 4 cycles in a year, it also has a long field holding capacity. Cabbage delight matures in 75 days from transplanting, is tolerant to black rot, and can be grown successfully in the summer… Cabbage cotton matures in 90 days, has a large-sized head weighing over 7kgs, and is also tolerant to black rot.

01:0601:47The first factor a farmer should consider is the days to maturity as it determines how soon the farmer can start making money and the number of cycles the farmer can plant in a year. If a farmer chooses the seed that matures in 65 days then they will have up to 4 cycles in a year whereas the one who chooses the one that matures in 90-100 days will only have 2-3 cycles with the former making more money.
01:4802:18The second factor is the head size where the farmer can only choose a cabbage variety with a head size demanded by their market e.g. formal markets demand medium sized cabbage heads and informal markets demand large sized heads. The third factor is crop uniformity in size and maturity where a farmer should choose a cabbage variety that matures at the same time so that harvesting is only done 2-3 times.
02:1903:01If a farmer chooses a cabbage variety that matures at different times it means that they have to harvest many times which will increase the cost associated with managing the crop reducing the profit margin for the farmer. The fourth factor is the field holding capacity where the farmer should choose a variety with a longer period between maturity and splitting.
03:0203:49The fifth factor is disease tolerance where a farmer should choose a cabbage variety tolerant to black rots and only shows signs and symptoms of black rots at the end of the season when the cabbage head is already formed properly. Cabbage Fabiola is an example of a cabbage variety that matures in 65 days and has a long field holding capacity.
