Ticks are of economic importance in farming hence need to be controlled.
There are different types of ticks ie hard and soft ticks. Hard ticks are further differentiated into one host tick, two host tick and three host tick. It is important to know the tick species you are dealing with on your farm because their control measures are not the same.
Tick‘s economic importance
Ticks are of economic importance to farmers because of the financial loss that they cause. They can transmit tick borne diseases eg red water, heart water, inflict wounds on the animal that may lead to abscesses, can cause mastitis when they feed on the udder and teats of the animal.
Ticks can also cause decrease in production due to irritation and pain.
Tick control
Tick control is by use of acaricides and this can be in the form of a spray race, plunge dip and pour ons. Whichever method you choose must be suitable for your farm.
For the spray race, you can use Taktic which has amitraz as the active ingredient. For pour ons, you can use delete all with amitraz and delta methrin as active ingredients. For injectable, you can use solution 3.5% which has ivermectin and abamectin as active ingredients.
Whichever product you use, always be aware of tick resistance on your farm.
