»The industry requires sesame seeds that are all of the same colour, size, and oil and starch contents. For this, you need varietal purity, meaning that all of the sesame has to be of the same variety. Mixed sesame seeds are difficult to sell and buyers pay less for them.«

Pure sesame of the same colour, size, oil and starch contents is preferred however sesame productivity decrease when varieties are mixed.

Sesame is grown for edible seeds and revenue to farmers. Following the right practices reduces variety mixing and increase consumer preferences.

Quality seed

Change seeds every 3 years.

Use quality seeds from trusted dealers, do not mix seeds during storage and do not use seeds on floor as these may be mixed.

Store different varieties in different stores and manage seed distribution to farmer.

Do not grow more than one variety and clean plot before plants flower by removing other varieties and sick plants.

Leave long distance between 2 fields of different varieties so that pollen is not easily carried.

Harvest varieties separately and clean harvesting equipments before moving from one variety.

Dry and thresh on separate floor and clean threshing equipments.

Put seeds in quality bags, close, mark the name of the variety and keep varieties in different stores. Make sure the bags are not attacked by mice that may mix seeds.
