Black and yellow Sigatoka is the most devastating banana disease however Black Sigatoka is more wide spread in lowlands while yellow Sigatoka is more in highland.
The disease is mainly transmitted through air and characterized by small streak that develop into black streaks which enlarge, fuse to form black patches that later develop into spots with grey centres hence reducing plants ability to make food.
Prevention and Control
Substitute susceptible cultivars with resistant varieties like yangambi, kayinja, FHIA 1,3,17,21,23,25 and NSH.
Remove diseased leaves to minimize on reinfection with in the plantation as spores move from old to young leaves.
Avoid water logged areas as this also accelerate the rate of spread
Lastly weed banana field regularly.
