Black Soldier Fly Farm Nepal
»In this video we have tried to explain the procedures to setup feeding box. Feeding box can be built in various ways depending our requirement. This is just one of them that we have used. Comments are welcome.«

Rearing black soldier flies (BSF) is a lucrative business opportunity to farmers and this requires less technology, capital and labour thus making is easy to be adopted by farmers.

However, when setting up boxes the diameter of feeding box should always be smaller than that of the collection box so that migrating pupa fall freely. When the larvae are placed in the feeding box they should be until they change to pupa. It is also very important to stack feeding box with circular iron rod of 1 inch height such that the migrating pupa freely move to the collection box.

Managerial practices

First obtain small rectangular box that should be used as nursery to keep bsf eggs for them to hatch, the eggs should be kept in box until larvae is 5 days old.

Thereafter place a mixture of rice bran and water in nursery box to provide food to the newly hatched larvae.

Additionally, the nursery box should be covered with lid having holes to maintain temperature and humidity levels within the box.

After transfer larvae to feeding box after 5 days and stack feeding box above collection box such that the migrating pupa falls directly into the collection box.

Then transfer migrated pupa to pupation box for them to transform into an adult fly.

Conclusively, the quantity of nursery, feeding, collection and pupation boxes vary depending upon user requirements.
