Rice is a profitable crop as it gives high yields easy to grow, highly demanded and a stable food to many people. Additionally, rice takes less that 4 months to harvest and when cooking rice can be prepared in various forms. Furthermore, when starting rice farming choose fertile soils with high water holding capacity and plant during or after heavy rain. Also for direct seeding divide land and make bunds. Rice is highly affected by pests such as birds, termites, fall army worm and rodents that lower the yields.

Nursery seeding

For nursery seeding, put seeds in gunny bags and soak for 20 hours, thereafter, sprinkle water and turn seeds 3 times a day for aeration. Additionally, transplant seedlings after 21 days and plant 2-3 seedlings per hill at spacing of 20cm in rows and 20cm between plants. Furthermore, apply and mix 200 kg of N PK per hectare before transplanting and 100kg of urea after transplanting. However, for direct seeding apply 100kg N PK per hectare and 50kg urea 5 weeks after sowing.

Growing and management

Choose swampy locations to save irrigation costs, clear, plough and prepare land before rain start, thereafter, apply basal fertilizers before final harrowing and divide field into plots. Additionally, level soil to reduce erosion and choose good quality improved seeds for high yields. Ensure to control rice pests. Lastly, after harvesting plough rice residues into soil and plant leguminous plants to maintain soil nutrients.
