To make compost, collect the raw materials which include leaves, crop remains, weeds, and other green materials. Compost can be made either in a compost pit or in a compost bin made up of wire mesh. In case of a compost bin with wire mesh, line the wire mesh with card boards to help keep the compost warmer which aids in decomposition,.
Composting materials
Composting materials are divided into browns and greens. Browns have a higher carbon content while greens are higher in nitrogen content. Wood ash can also be added as it contains a variety of micro nutrients.
To make compost, put the compost making raw materials in the compost pile but do not put them directly onto the ground. First add a layer of already made compost and onto it, add the raw materials. The already made compost helps act as an inoculant of microorganisms to the raw compost materials.
The compost materials are put into the pile in layers alternating brown and green materials but starting with green materials.
Brown materials include old straw, card board paper, and dry leaves while green materials include grass clippings and weeds.
Add compost boosters like livestock manure and beddings from herbivorous animals like cattle.
Browns and greens should be mixed in a ratio of 1 part browns to 2 parts of greens. Add some water to the mixture of ingredients but do not make the heap either too wet or too dry. After setting up the compost heap, cover it with a tarpaulin.
