Super napier grass is a suitable pasture for making silage.

Super napier contains proteins and carbohydrates which are very vital for good growth of animals hence making it suitable for making silage. Silage feed is made by compacting grasses and then stored. This can be done with or without molasses.

Ensiling

To make silage from super napier grass, it is preferable that you cut the napier when it has about six internodes. At this stage, the napier can regrow after cutting and the napier has accumulated enough energy for the animals. Do not harvest when the napier has over grown as at this stage, the napier is too hard and unpalatable to the animals.

When making surface silage, lay a polythene on the ground and chop the napier grass into pieces and put the pieces on to the polythene.

Compact the napier by rolling a drum filled with water over the cut pieces to eliminate air and make it air tight.

Cover the top using another polythene and add soil.
