Feeding accounts for about 70% of the budget in catfish rearing and if you want your catfish to grow well, you need to avoid making mistakes in feeding. The first mistake farmers make is over-feeding where farmers give the fish feed more than they need. In overfeeding, there is a lot of feed wastage hence you should always check the feed to give the fish per time and this should increase as the fish grows.
Other feeding mistakes
Underfeeding the fish. This affects not only the cost of production but also the fish itself. When you underfeed, the fish would take longer to attain a given weight and will also lead to cannibalism where fish eat each other due to lack of food.
Wrong feeding time. Fish have specific times when they have high appetite to eat and the digestibility is high. Feeding the fish in the wrong time leads to a lot of feed not being eaten hence being wasted.
Wrong feeding pattern i.e. its important that you have a pattern in which you give feed to your fish. Many farmers usually prefer powering all the feed at a single spot but this is wrong hence it’s important that you have all the fish eat at the same time.
Wrong feeding method is where you give fish feed that is bigger than the required feed size. This makes the fish not to eat and this will have negative impacts on the growth of the fish.
