»Cassava is a plant with valuable roots which are hidden below the soil. One of the main issues for cassava farmers is how do you estimate the value of your crop… but it is possible to work out the size of your cassava yield before harvest.«

Before harvesting, most farmers dont know how much to expect from their fields. Knowing this helps the farmer for proper planning.

To estimate the value of crop, farmers need to know plant population in field by measuring. Start with proper mapping of field, measure size of field, number of cassava roots expected from that field. Factors affecting yield are: soil type, field and land scape characteristics, variety and crop management.

Cassava samples

Count numbers of cassava that you have per unit area and root yield per plant. In field, select 3 target areas away from boarders. Make a triangle: Hold a rope pole tape with stick in each of corners and measure 5 metres on each side. Harvest 3 plants crossing 3 corners of each triangle, cut off all cassava root and cassava tips with 1.5cm diameter and then record weight of fresh roots.

Yield calculation

Using an application: Measure the size of field, select 3 typical parts of field and make a triangle at each area, count number of plants inside each triangle, harvest cassava plants crossing the 3 corners of each and weigh the roots of each plant.

To calculate yield/ ha: Average number of plant population X average weight of roots per plant / 10.826 (square metres in each triangle/ha).

Yield /ha X size of field= yield for field.

Yield for field/10.826 = Average yield (kg /square kilometres)/Average yield (kg /square kilometres) X 10.000(number of square metres in each triangle) = Yield per field
