Tomato green house farming increases yields and water utilization by controlling growing conditions, pests and disease incidences. Usually, harvesting is done at ten weeks after transplanting.
Normally, properly grown green house tomato plants yield 20 kg after 8 months from each plant. Additionally, ensure to sanitize before entering green house to control diseases. Also when transplanting ensure that seedlings have pencil thick stems as well as bending seedlings to encourage more root development.
Steps to establish
Start by sowing tomato seedlings 20cm apart and 1cm deep on moist soils placed in trays. Later put thin seedlings to 7cm in rows to ensure steady growth of seedlings. Transplant seedlings 1 month after germination to a fertile well prepared filed with 1.5 feet soil depth. Ensure that seedlings are spaced at proper spaces to ensure proper plant growth. Furthermore, when transplanting ensure that seedling are planted 2cm deep.
Crop management
First, apply urea to enhance plant vigour, organic fertilizers to increase soil nutrients and constantly dig from within rows to avoid soil compaction. Also establish strong plant support to avoid plant bending, prune plant with hands and remove all leaves once fruits have formed to allow light penetration . Lastly, control diseases, irrigate plants during morning and evening hours to avoid plant death.
