Yellow watermelon defers from the normal watermelon in terms of the color, taste and appearance and nutritional content. Yellow watermelons have a yellow to a deep orange flesh.
Crop propagation
Soil preparation. Yellow watermelons thrive in fertile well drained sandy loam soils with a pH level of between 6.0 and 6.8. prepare the soil by adding organic mater and ensuring good drainage.
Planting. Yellow watermelons are typically grown from seed and the seeds are planted directly in the soil.
Space the plants 3 to 4 feet apart in rows to allow for proper growth.
Crop management practices
Watering. Watermelon plants require consistent moisture. Use drip irrigation or sprinkler to keep the soil moist. Be conscious not to over water as water logged soils can lead to root rot.
Fertilization. Apply balanced fertilizer or compost before planting and side dress with nitrogen rich fertilizer as the plant grows. Follow the recommended fertilizer application rates for your specific soil types.
Pest and disease management. Monitor your crops regularly for any sign of pest or disease. Common issues include aphids, cucumber beetles and powdery mildew. Use organic or chemical control measures as needed.
Support and pruning. As the plants grow, provide support to the fruits to prevent them from touching the ground. Prune the crop to remove excess foliage improving air circulation and fruit quality.
Harvesting. Harvest when the fruit surface turns pale yellow or cream color and the fruit sounds hollow when tapped.
