There are a lot of wastes in our homes that we can convert into compost for use as fertilizers in gardens even without having a compost pit.
To make a compost bin, you will need half inch wire mesh and 4 tree posts. Fix the poles in the ground and encircle it with the wire mesh. Ensure that your bin is 3 feet wide and 3 feet deep. This enables you to turn the compost, enures that the compost bin retains heat and also ensures that the materials in the pit remain moist so that the microbes can break the materials down into compost.
Composting process
You can have your wastes from which you will be making compost from bakeries, greens and/ or browns. The greens can be all your food scraps, leaves and the browns could be the leaves when they dry out.
Mix these in a ratio of 1:3 or 1:5 while incorporating cow dung in between their layers. During the filling of the compost pit, put the grass straws at the bottom followed by the greens and food scraps.
Incase you want the breakdown to be done easily and compost be produced faster, shred the materials into small pieces before putting them into the compost pit.
Moisten the materials by pouring in some water. If you still have materials and the compost is not full yet, add more layers of the materials in the order as above.
Grab a handful of soil and spread it over the materials to ensure that microbes are there to break down the materials.
Keep it moist and turn it every 3 to 5 days to allow the materials break down faster.
