»„...culture of quality is very important for us to push back the dumping from outside, if we don‘t do it; whether its from Africa, whether it‘s from my mothers kitchen, people are not going to buy it, so we have to become competitive, we have to develop competitive advantage and quality is the most important element in competitive advantage and, it‘s within our reach, we can do it.“«

Rice is a stable crop all over the world, its production increase with demand by improving rice quality through following proper guidelines reduces losses and increase and income.

There are several practices that lower rice quality to mention varietal mixture, wrong harvesting time, impurities, poor drying and storage to add on that proper harvesting should be done 5 weeks after flowering and also turn grains time to evenly dry. On the other hand over dried grains crack and break during milling therefore do not over dry.

Guidelines to follow

When sowing avoid sowing a mixture of varieties for a homogeneous harvest and de husk prperly while preventing breaking of grains during milling.

Additionally harvest, store and thresh different rice varieties separately to maintain quality well as harvest at the right time to ease milling, control losses and earn more profits to add on that thresh on clean floor, winnow, pick grains and dry on a clean floor to remove weed seeds and impurities.

Nevertheless avoid drying on bare floor, road sides as impurities can get in and keep grains in bags raised on wood to avoid development of moulds.
