„Use quality seeds in a seedbed of one meter wide. Make furrows about every 15 cm. Do not sow too many seeds too close together or the seedlings will be too tall and weak and they will break easily when transplanted. Protect the seedbed from the hot sun and hard rains by covering it with straw, palm leaves or other mulch. Protect the seedlings from pests and animals by putting an insect net over your seedbed. Transplant the seedlings at the right stage. Strong and healthy seedlings are the best start for a healthy and productive crop.“

Making chilli seedbed requires effort, but its worthy it because good seedbed results into high germinability of seeds, and healthy uniform seedlings.

Begin with high quality seeds. Some seeds are pretreated to protect them from disease. When small plot is to be planted, reusable planting trays can be used while for larger fields, establish seedbeds in the field near a water source.

Properly clear the site where seedbed is to be put and make seedbed of 1m width and any length, Level the seedbed and water it well. Make shallow farrows which are 15cm apart, plant and then cover with mulch. When the seeds germinate, remove the mulch and add manure between rows incase soils are poor and then make a shade for the seedbed but harden off towards transplanting.

Other practices

Mix seeds with sieved sand to separate them before planting. Treat the soil with heat in case soil was previously infested by nematodes and Protect seedlings from pests and diseases.
