»Staking and pruning passion fruit explains about how we manage our passion fruit orchard from planting until harvesting in order to provide farmers with income throughout the year. The passion fruit are grown for the fresh fruit and juice.«

Passion fruits are highly demanded and generate income if managed well. Also passion fruit is a climbing plant thus staking and pruning is key to get many healthy passion fruits.

Additionally, for optimum production do not allow secondary and tertiary vines to twist on the main vine and ensure exposing all passion fruit plant parts to light and air circulation to facilitate flowering. Furthermore pruning should be timely done as it stimulates fruit production.

Process involved

Start by establishing stakes 3 metres within rows and 3-6 metres between rows and plant passion fruits 6 metres apart within rows to allow good growth of the main vine.

Secondary, stake plants when they are 1 metre tall, allow only one vine to grow up and prune secondary off branches.

Additionally, pinch off top bud when main vine reaches the trellis wire to allow side vines grow from the top end.

Also, allow two main vines to grow in opposite directions on trellis wire and properly prune tertiary vines so that they do not twist with secondary and main vines.

Lastly, cut the 3 secondary old vines after each harvest season to encourage new growth and remove dead plant materials when pruning.
