Gardener‘s Supply
»If you‘ve never bitten into a fragrant, vine-ripened, sun-warmed tomato harvested fresh from your own garden, you haven‘t tasted a real tomato«

Tomatoes give high returns and are easily grown from seed to harvesting, these only require simple agricultural practices.

However when germinating tomato seeds avoid using garden soils as this drains poorly and may contain disease causing organisms as well as diseases. When growing tomato seeds it is highly recommended to plant 2 seeds per cell so that incase one dies the other grows.

Growing steps

Start by moisturising the seed germinating medium and gently press the moist soil to remove air pockets. Secondly open 2 holes a quarter deep per cell, plant 1 seed per hole and cover with thin growth medium layer. Additionally, gently firm the top to eliminate air pockets and water lightly. Thereafter, cover tray and place it in a warm place of about 70-75 degrees Fahrenheit to preserve moisture and encourage seed germination.

Management of tomatoes

Always monitor seedlings, moisten the planting mix and subject seedlings to light after germination to allow air saturation required for proper growth. Thereafter thin when seedlings are 2 inches tall, apply soluble fertilizers weekly when seedlings attain 2 sets of leaves. Ensure to repot tomatoes when roots have filled the cell while burying the stem to encourage more root formation and water the seedlings.

Transplanting and care

Additionally, when seedlings are 1 feet tall transplant while burying the lower non foliated stem to encourage more root formation and lastly water thoroughly, add plant support, fence off the plants and mulch the garden.
