»The production of animal fodder from local encroacher bush has transformational potential for farmers in Namibia. Farms become more drought resilient, productive rangeland is restored through bush thinning and billions are saved in reduced animal fodder imports. The short film introduces the process of producing bush-based animal feed in Namibia from harvesting of the bush to milling, mixing with supplements and storing. It is based on a one-year pilot project spearheaded by GIZ Bush Control and Biomass Utilisation Project from April 2016 to July 2017«

During drought periods, feeds stand to be the most important problem faced by the farmers to feed their animals and this reduces the quality of the livestock products which hinder production.

Animal feed from local bush is a big opportunity to feed the farmers as they fodder and control bush from their fields at the time as well. Bush based feed works especially during drought as emergency feed and as a supplement feed.

Fodder production

First, bush is harvested when green with flowers, leaves and seed if available using panga. Thinner branches are used as the best to make feed. After harvesting, twigs and branches are milled into fibre which is then mixed with supplements and fed to animals instantly.

Similarly, in case of storage, fibre is dried before mixing or pelleting. Bush feed is a solution to over come drought period and as well a business.

Finally, bush feed production reduces on dependence on imported feed and in a long run, it contribute to rangeland restoration.
